Welcome to EducationConnect's PowerPortals page. You can browse through more than 3,000 institutions by selecting a general area of interest called a PowerPortal. Our six PowerPortals are: Majors, School Type, Campus Culture, Admissions and Fees, Location, and Special Programs.

Majors
The major you choose determines most of the courses you take during your degree program. Most majors in a typical undergraduate program require four different kinds of courses.

The number of courses in each category depends on the school, the major, and the type of degree you are seeking.

  1. General Education Courses: These include broad range of liberal arts courses that offer basic content in many academic disciplines. Because most Americans change jobs every seven years, these courses provide a broad foundation of knowledge and teach learning skills that help you adapt to the fast-changing job scene.

  2. Minor Courses: In addition to your major area of study, many schools permit you to pick a "minor" area, so that a certain number of courses can be taken in another area that interests you. These subjects can often form the basis of a second major or are prerequisites for entering graduate school.

  3. Elective Courses: These are courses you can take that contribute points toward graduation but do not relate to your major or minor areas of concentration.

  4. Major Courses: Although each school has a different definition, most majors include two types of subjects: core courses and elective courses.

  • Core courses are those that every student must take to fulfill the requirements of the major. Core courses for your major are usually taken in your third and fourth years.

  • Elective courses are those that a student may take in addition to the core courses.

  • Most majors require a high number of upper division level courses (third and fourth year level courses). Some students take enough courses in two different fields to earn a "double major" or a strong augmented major. They usually begin to take courses in their majors in their second year.

School Type
Colleges and universities in the USA are operated either privately or publicly. Public institutions are sponsored by state, local, or federal government. Private institutions can be either independent (nonprofit) or proprietary (profit-making). Some private institutions have a particular religious affiliation.

In addition, institutions can be coed (they admit both men and women), women-only, men-only, coed-primarily women, or coed-primarily men. If any of these issues are important to you, use this PowerPortal to find institutions that meet your needs.

Campus Culture
Finding a school that offers your desired major might be easy, but you may also want to look for a school that offers the extracurricular options you want to experience.

Attending a university involves more than studying for a degree. The university experience can provide a range of opportunities that will support your growth in many areas of your life.

Student services, study environment, campus sports, art and music programs, and all the other special programs offered by a school can strongly affect the quality of your academic experience. For some students, campus culture may be the starting point for finding the right school.

This PowerPortal is designed to help you find the right campus environment for you.

Admissions & Fees
Each university or institutional program has admission requirements, and each has costs associated with admission and attendance. (Although many of these fees are listed on this Web site, students should realize that there may be additional costs that are not reflected here.)

The Admissions and Fees PowerPortal presents the admission requirements, costs, other issues you will face regarding expenses. Click here to find the admission requirements and fees of universities that interest you.

Location
The location of an institution can influence the kind of academic and social experience you will have.

Because there are many schools in every region, this PowerPortal can be used as a starting point for students who are interested in a specific location for their learning experience.

Special Programs
Participating in special academic programs offered by a school can make your student life more time-efficient and economical, and enhance your overall academic profile.

Use this PowerPortal to identify schools offering the special programs that can be most helpful to you.
